Assos & Athena’s Temple
Discover the timeless charm of Assos, a seaside village steeped in history and perched above the Aegean coast. Founded between 1000–900 BC by Aeolian colonists from Lesbos, Assos was once home to Aristotle, who opened his Academy here, and later visited by St. Paul.
Begin your exploration at the Temple of Athena, dramatically set atop a trachyte crag with panoramic views of the region. On clear days, you can see Lesbos to the south, Pergamum to the southeast, and Mount Ida of Phrygia to the east—a breathtaking sweep of ancient geography.
Though many of Assos’s original structures lie in ruins, its modern name Behramkale still marks an active village and port. The temple ruins remain a powerful symbol of the city’s enduring legacy.
Descend the steep seaward slope to Port Liman, a charming hamlet where old stone houses now serve as inns and restaurants. Here, you’ll enjoy a taste of local wine and a cheese platter, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Aegean.
Return to the port enriched by Assos’s history and coastal serenity.
