Split Walking Tour: Diocletian’s Palace & Old Town

Step into the heart of Split, a city shaped by 17 centuries of history, where ancient Roman architecture blends seamlessly with vibrant modern life. At its core lies the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace, built at the turn of the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Diocletian — a living monument that now forms the foundation of Split’s Old Town.

Your walking tour begins in the palace cellars, remarkably well-preserved and offering insight into the structure and daily life of this imperial residence turned fortified camp. Above ground, the palace has evolved into a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, lined with shops, homes, and historical landmarks.

Continue to the Cathedral of St. Duje, dedicated to the city’s patron saint and built atop the remains of an ancient Roman shrine — reputedly the oldest cathedral in the world. You’ll also visit the Temple of Jupiter, the Golden Gate, the Silver Gate, and the iconic Peristyle Square, where Roman columns frame a dramatic open-air courtyard.

After your guided tour, enjoy a traditional lunch at a local restaurant, followed by free time to explore Split’s city center at your own pace before returning to Zadar.
