Pula: Roman Amphitheatre & Local Market
According to Adriatic legend, the ancient town of Polai — known as the “source of life” — was founded by Jason and Medea at the tip of the Istrian Peninsula. Centuries later, the Romans transformed it into a divine retreat, a place of indulgence for the privileged. Today, this storied settlement is simply known as Pula, a vibrant city where myth and history converge.
Your guide will lead you through the layers of Pula’s 3,000-year history, revealing its status as one of the oldest towns in Europe. The city is best known for its remarkably preserved Roman ruins, the most iconic of which is the 1st-century Roman amphitheater. Ranked as the sixth largest amphitheater in the world, it remains in active use today, hosting summer film festivals beneath its ancient arches.
As your walking tour continues, you’ll encounter other architectural treasures from the Roman era, including the Sergius Arch, a triumphal monument that has stood for nearly two millennia, and the Temple of Augustus, built in honor of the emperor himself. You’ll also pass through the Roman city gates and walls, and glimpse a nearby Byzantine chapel, adding depth to the city’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
The experience concludes with free time at Pula’s open-air city market, where you can browse fresh produce, local crafts, and regional delicacies — a lively reflection of everyday life in this historic town.
After your exploration, you’ll reboard the motorcoach for the return journey to Rovinj, enriched by the stories and sights of one of Croatia’s most fascinating cities.
