Set out on a scenic journey to Gjirokastra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on the slopes of the Mali i Gjere hills, overlooking the Drino River. Known as the “Town of a Thousand Steps,” Gjirokastra is one of Albania’s most picturesque and historically rich towns.
Begin with a visit to the Old Fortress, originally built in the 4th century and now the largest castle in Albania. Located atop the hill, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley. At the entrance, explore the National Armory Museum, which presents the evolution of Albanian weaponry through the ages.
Continue to the Old Bazaar Quarter, where narrow cobblestone streets are lined with traditional shops and historic landmarks. Your guide will highlight the Bazaar Mosque (1757), known for its circular stone roof and tall minaret, as well as a nearby church dating to 1780.
Walk with your guide through the Mecite Quarter, featuring 17th-century Turkish baths, the Mecite Mosque, and Varosh Church (1776). Then pause at Hotel Cajupi to sample local wines and a traditional Albanian pie, followed by free time to explore the bazaar’s charming atmosphere.
Continue with a scenic drive to the Mesopotamian Monastery, a 12th-century Byzantine fortified church dedicated to Saint Nicolas. Although the interior remains under reconstruction, you’ll have time to view and photograph the historic exterior.
Conclude the experience with lunch at a local restaurant, featuring regional Albanian delicacies, before returning to the port.
