Ancient Pergamum & Asclepion
Travel north through the scenic countryside to the ancient city of Pergamum, known today as Bergama, first settled by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. This once-flourishing cultural center played a pivotal role in the intellectual and medical history of the ancient world.
Ascend by cable car to the Pergamum Acropolis, perched at 902 feet, where temples, palaces, and public buildings once stood behind fortified walls. Though much of the original architecture has faded, the site still evokes the grandeur of its past.
Visit the remains of the Library of Pergamum, once second only to Alexandria in size and influence. It was here that parchment paper was invented, supporting a thriving community of scholars and philosophers.
Continue to the Temple of Trajan, commissioned by Emperor Hadrian, and admire its elegant Roman design.
After lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional Turkish cuisine, explore the Asclepion, an ancient healing complex dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine. This sanctuary once welcomed patients from across the region seeking spiritual and physical treatment through rituals, therapies, and sacred springs.
Return to the port with a deeper appreciation of Pergamum’s legacy in knowledge, architecture, and healing.
