Patmos: Cave of St John & Monastery
Travel from the port town of Skala to the sacred island of Patmos, revered as the place where St John the Theologian received divine visions and wrote the Book of Revelation.
Begin your visit at the Grotto of St John, a small cave now transformed into a beautifully adorned chapel. Inside, see the stone said to have served as the saint’s pillow and experience the spiritual atmosphere of this revered site.
Continue to the Monastery of St John, founded in 1088 and considered the richest monastery in the Dodecanese. Its imposing exterior contrasts with the light-filled interior, where frescoed chapels, Byzantine relics, and rare manuscripts reveal centuries of devotion and artistry. Walk through archways and pebble-paved corridors to explore the five chapels, including one housing the relics of the monastery’s founder.
Visit the Treasury Museum, home to rare icons, chalices, crowns, vestments, and silver sailing ships inlaid with gemstones. Among its 13,000 manuscripts is a prized fragment of the Gospel of St Mark, written in silver on purple vellum in the 6th century.
Conclude with free time in Patmos town, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Bay of Patmos and the surrounding archipelago.
