On the mainland, you’ll arrive at Bukit Merah, a water theme park set against the serene backdrop of a 7,000-acre lake. Among its small islands is the extraordinary Orangutan Island Sanctuary.

A short boat ride takes you to this sanctuary, which serves as both a breeding ground and a rehabilitation facility for these endangered primates. Step ashore and enter the 328-foot-long protective “cage”, which allows you to view the Orang Utans freely roaming in their habitat. You’ll witness their endearing behaviors—swinging through trees, napping in the shade, or interacting playfully.
