Mycenae: Gate of Kings
Travel inland across the Argive Plain, passing the ancient cities of Tiryns and Argos, to reach Mycenae—described by Homer as “well-built and rich in gold.” Hidden in the hills for centuries, this legendary citadel was the seat of King Agamemnon, commander of the Greeks at Troy.
Your guided visit begins at the Lion Gate, Europe’s oldest surviving monumental sculpture, and continues through cyclopean walls that once protected this powerful city. Explore the shaft tombs where Heinrich Schliemann unearthed the famous golden death masks in 1874—now housed in the Archaeological Museum in Athens.
Enjoy sweeping views over the Argive before visiting the Beehive Tomb, also known as the Treasury of Atreus. Believed by some to be the Tomb of Agamemnon, this massive grave features a 10-foot entrance corridor and a cool, domed interior that showcases the architectural brilliance of the Mycenaean civilization.
Mycenae remains a cornerstone of Homeric legend, deeply woven into the fabric of European history and art.
