Labin Discovery: History, Art & Ceramics
Perched high above the Adriatic, the hilltop town of Labin welcomes you with sweeping sea views and centuries of layered history. Once a medieval stronghold, Labin’s Old Town is a mosaic of Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic architecture, where taffy-colored homes, Venetian palaces, and cobblestone alleyways create a setting as rich in character as it is in charm.
Passing through the main gate, adorned with a Latin Coat of Arms and the Venetian lion, you’ll arrive at the Town Square, the heart of Labin’s historic core. As you wander through its steep streets, your guide will share stories of the town’s artistic and political legacy, culminating in a visit to the Labin National Museum, housed in a Baroque palace. Here, you’ll explore exhibits on the town’s mining heritage, including a replica mineshaft, and learn about the Labin Republic, a unique chapter in Istrian history brought to life through interactive maps and archival photographs. The museum’s Memorial Collection also features the works of Matthias Flacius, a 16th-century philosopher and close associate of Martin Luther.
From Labin, a short scenic transfer brings you to Raša, a town shaped by its industrial roots and artistic revival. At the award-winning Merania Art Workshop, you’ll be welcomed by local ceramicists who specialize in functional pottery crafted using traditional techniques. You’ll have the opportunity to observe and participate in the creative process, from shaping to decorating, as the team produces everything from tableware and cooking vessels to ceramic lamps, eco-containers, tiles, and murals.
This tour offers a rare blend of history, artistry, and hands-on experience, set against the backdrop of Istria’s most evocative landscapes.
