Byzantine Mystras

Journey into the heart of Byzantine history as you explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mystras, dramatically perched on the steep slopes of Mount Taygetos. Founded in 1249 by William II, this fortified city was designed to resist invasion and became a thriving center of nobility and culture. The Monovasia and Anaplon Gates, once connected by a central road, divided the city between aristocrats and commoners. Today, Mystras remains Greece’s best-preserved Byzantine city.

Begin with a panoramic stop above the site for photo opportunities overlooking the ruins, then continue on foot to explore the restored palaces, vaulted alleys, and city walls—silent witnesses to centuries of siege and resilience. Admire the fresco-adorned churches, including Aghios Dimitrios, the Evangelistria, and the Pantanassa, each echoing the grandeur of a bygone era.

For those seeking a challenge, an optional climb to the Kastro, a 13th-century castle at the summit, rewards you with one of the most breathtaking views in the region.
