Bodrum Castle & Ancient Mausoleum
A short coach ride from the port will lead you to the magnificent Castle of Bodrum, constructed using stones from the iconic Mausoleum of Halicarnassus—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This enduring fortress stands as a testament to the legacy of the Knights of Rhodes, who dismantled the mausoleum to source its materials.
Your journey continues to the Sunken Boat Museum, where you’ll discover artifacts recovered from the depths of the sea. Highlights include treasures spanning the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages and the fascinating cargo of a 13th-century BC Syrian trade ship. Be sure to visit the Carian Princess exhibit, where a striking gold tiara reveals her regal history and the artistry of her era.
Next, stroll through the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus ruins, Bodrum’s oldest and most celebrated treasure. Created by Artemisia II to honor her husband, King Mausolos, this grand mausoleum inspired the modern term for grand tombs. While some fragments of its intricate frescos are now housed in the British Museum, the ruins still tell a captivating story of history and devotion.
