Bodrum Castle & Ancient Mausoleum
Discover the layered history of Bodrum, where ancient wonders and medieval fortifications converge. A short coach ride from the port brings you to the Castle of Bodrum, built by the Knights of Rhodes using stones from the legendary Mausoleum of Halicarnassus—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This enduring fortress stands as a testament to centuries of craftsmanship and conquest.
Inside the castle, explore the Sunken Boat Museum, home to remarkable artifacts recovered from the depths of the Aegean. Highlights include treasures from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages, and the cargo of a 13th-century BC Syrian trade ship. Don’t miss the Carian Princess exhibit, where a striking gold tiara reveals her regal story and the artistry of her time.
Conclude your tour with a walk through the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus ruins, Bodrum’s oldest and most celebrated monument. Commissioned by Artemisia II in honor of her husband King Mausolos, this grand tomb inspired the modern term “mausoleum.” Though many fragments now reside in the British Museum, the site still evokes a powerful sense of history and devotion.
