Ancient Akrotiri
Step back in time and uncover the secrets of Santorini’s ancient civilization with a visit to the archaeological site of Akrotiri and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera.
Begin your journey with a tender boat transfer to Athinios Port, where your guide will greet you for a scenic drive to the southern part of the island. Pause for a photo stop at the famous windmill ruins, offering panoramic views of the caldera and volcanic landscape.
Continue to the prehistoric city of Akrotiri, often referred to as Santorini’s Pompeii. Buried under volcanic ash around 1650 BC, this remarkably preserved site reveals multi-story homes, city squares, shops, and vivid frescoes that reflect a highly advanced society. Some speculate that Akrotiri may even be the inspiration for the legend of Atlantis.
Next, travel to Thira town, where a short walk brings you to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. Here, explore a curated collection of pottery, figurines, and carvings dating from the 25th to the 1st century BC, many of which were excavated from Akrotiri itself.
Your tour concludes in Fira town, where you may choose to remain for independent exploration or shopping. To return to the ship, take the cable car down to the Old Port and board your tender boat. Cable car ticket is included in the tour price.
