Corinth Canal Crossing & Ruins
Explore the legendary city of Ancient Corinth and sail through the engineering marvel of the Corinth Canal on this two-part journey through history and innovation.
Depart the pier for a scenic drive to the Corinth Canal, which dramatically slices through the Isthmus of Corinth, separating the Peloponnesian Peninsula from mainland Greece. Board a local boat to cruise the canal’s narrow passage, flanked by 170-foot-high limestone walls. Built between 1881 and 1893, this four-mile waterway connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, transforming the peninsula into an island.
Continue to Ancient Corinth, once one of the wealthiest and most fortified cities of antiquity. Your guided walking tour reveals a blend of Greek and Roman ruins, including a Christian Basilica, the starting lines of a Greek racetrack, a sacred spring with bronze lion’s head spouts, and the elaborate Roman Fountain of Peirene.
Stand before the Temple of Apollo, where seven original Doric columns still rise proudly, and walk the Lechaion Road, once the city’s main artery to the port. Explore the marketplace, a colonnaded square once bustling with merchants and artisans.
Reboard your vehicle for the return drive to Nafplion and your ship.
