Stroll Through Monemvasia
Step into the fortified medieval town of Monemvasia, carved directly into a sea rock and connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. This hidden gem of Greece invites you to explore its cobblestone streets, stone arches, and centuries-old architecture.
Enter through the narrow castle gate and follow your guide along the main street, lined with boutiques and shaded by bougainvillea. In the Main Square, a ship’s cannon stands as a silent sentinel, evoking the town’s storied past.
View the 13th-century Christ Elkomenos Cathedral, known for its barrel-vaulted nave and 14th-century icon masterpiece—currently visible only from the outside due to renovations. Across the square, visit the Archaeological Museum, housed in a 16th-century Turkish mosque, featuring architectural sculptures and ceramics from the Early Christian to Byzantine periods.
Conclude your visit with free time to wander the alleyways, browse local workshops, or relax at a café or taverna (at your own expense).
