Birthplace of the Olympic Games
Olympia is a peaceful sanctuary today, shaded by plane trees, poplars, oaks, and pines. Though the athletes and spectators have long departed and the temples stand as echoes of their glorious past, the Olympic spirit endures. Every four years, the Olympic flame is ceremonially kindled at this ancient site, and the torch relay begins its journey from Olympia to the host city of the Games.
After an approximately 40-minute scenic drive from the cruise port, you’ll arrive at the archaeological site and museum. Your expert guide will bring Ancient Olympia’s legacy to life, showing you where athletes trained and competed, and where the original Olympic races were held. Athletic contests ceased here in AD 393, and the Sanctuary of Zeus was lost to time and destruction.
At the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Olympia, marvel at the pediments of the Temple of Zeus, displayed in the museum’s central hall. Notable exhibits include the Hermes of Praxiteles, an original masterpiece, and a helmet inscribed with the name of Miltiades, the commander who led the Greeks to victory at Marathon. After exploring one of the most unspoiled archaeological sites in Greece, enjoy a brief stop in a nearby village before returning to the pier.
