Sparta & Mystras Highlights
Travel north from the pier into the heart of Laconia, where ancient legends and medieval grandeur await. Your journey begins in Sparta, once one of the most powerful city-states in Greece. Known for its austere lifestyle and military discipline, Sparta left few architectural traces—but its legacy endures. Stop for photos at the statue of King Leonidas, the heroic leader who defied the Persian army at Thermopylae with just 300 warriors.
Continue to the lower slopes of Mount Taygetos, where the fortified ruins of Mystras rise dramatically from the hillside. This UNESCO-listed site was once a thriving Byzantine stronghold and cultural center. Join your guide for an in-depth walking tour through churches, palaces, and narrow medieval streets, and admire the frescoes of Aghios Dimitrios, Evangelistria, and Pantanassa, even if you opt out of the summit climb.
After the tour, enjoy lunch and free time to explore Mystras at your own pace before reboarding your vehicle for the return to the pier.
