Byzantine Mystras
Travel inland from Gythion, passing through the legendary region of Sparta, once one of the most powerful city-states of ancient Greece. Known for its military discipline and austere lifestyle, Sparta left few monuments behind—but its legacy remains unmatched.
Your destination is the fortified ruins of Mystras, perched on the slopes of Mount Taygetos. This UNESCO-listed site was the final stronghold of the Byzantine Empire, a flourishing center of theology, politics, and art. Join your guide for an in-depth walking tour through frescoed churches, palaces, and narrow stone streets, and admire the painted interiors of Aghios Dimitrios, Evangelistria, and Pantanassa, even if you opt out of the summit climb.
After the guided portion, enjoy free time to explore independently, take photos, or simply absorb the atmosphere before reboarding your coach for the return journey.
