Ephesus, St. John & Mary’s House
Experience the spiritual and architectural legacy of Western Anatolia on a full-day tour that begins with sacred Christian heritage and unfolds into the grandeur of Roman civilization.
Start your journey with a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary, a revered shrine nestled on Mt. Pagus. Believed to be the final residence of Jesus’s mother, this peaceful site is supported by archaeological evidence dating to the 1st century AD, aligning with long-held traditions. Surrounded by pine forest and serenity, it remains a place of pilgrimage and reflection.
Continue to Ephesus, one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Walk the Sacred Way, the city’s main Roman thoroughfare, and admire the Celsus Library, Hadrian’s Temple, and the Marble Road leading toward the Great Amphitheatre, where St. Paul once preached to the Ephesians.
Visit the Terrace Houses, a newly excavated residential quarter opposite Hadrian’s Temple. These multi-level homes, built into the slopes of Bulbul Mountain, belonged to Ephesus’s elite and feature intricate mosaics and frescoes that reveal the refined lifestyle of the Roman upper class.
Proceed to Selçuk to explore the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, built in the 6th century AD over the believed burial site of the Apostle. Its cruciform layout and domed architecture reflect its significance in early Christian history.
Enjoy a traditional Turkish lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to a weaving center where artisans demonstrate the art of carpet weaving and dyeing. As you enjoy refreshments, browse a beautiful selection of handwoven carpets—each reflecting the rich heritage and craftsmanship of Anatolia.
