Ephesus Terrace Houses & Celsus Library

Explore the grandeur of ancient Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the world. Founded by the Carians and Lelegs, and later favored by Antony and Cleopatra, Ephesus offers a vivid glimpse into the architectural and cultural brilliance of the Roman era.

Begin your walking tour at the Celsus Library, its restored façade standing as a testament to Roman engineering and elegance. Continue to the Great Amphitheatre, which once seated over 25,000 spectators and served as a central venue for public gatherings and performances. This is also the site where St. Paul preached to the Ephesians in the 1st century AD.

See the Temple of Hadrian, then cross to the Terrace Houses, located opposite. These multi-level residences, built into the slopes of Bulbul Mountain, were home to Ephesus’s elite. Their mosaics and frescoes reveal the refined lifestyle of the city’s wealthiest citizens, with each rooftop forming the terrace of the house above.

On your return to Izmir, stop at a local weaving center for a demonstration of traditional carpet weaving and dyeing, accompanied by refreshments including Turkish pastries, wine, beer, and soft drinks.
